News: Deutsche Telekom softens call center cuts

BERLIN – Deutsche Telekom AG said Friday it has secured employee approval for shutting many of its call centers in Germany after it agreed to close nine fewer facilities than originally planned.
Deutsche Telekom said in August it wanted to cut costs by concentrating its activities on 24 call centers. Labor unions had opposed the plan.
But the company says it reached an agreement with Deutsche Telekom's employee council to keep 33 call centers open while closing down 30 facilities by mid-2011.
It said Friday that it pledged to keep the 33 sites open through 2012.
Deutsche Telekom says none of the 18,000 people employed at its call centers would be cut, though some may be offered equivalent jobs at other sites.
