BELGRADE, Serbia – A Serbian court says it has received no response from U.S. witnesses it invited to testify in the case of a Serbian basketball player who fled the United States after allegedly beating a fellow student.
The court in Belgrade is investigating Miladin Kovacevic, a former Binghamton University player charged with assaulting Bryan Steinhauer in upstate New York on May 4. Steinhauer only recently emerged from a coma.
Kovacevic, 22, jumped bail and fled to his native Serbia in June. Serbia has refused to hand him over to the U.S., but arrested him in October.
The Belgrade court has invited U.S. witnesses to come to Serbia to testify or give statements via a video link on Tuesday.
Court spokeswoman Nada Djordjevic said Monday there has been no response to the invitation.
