BAGHDAD – Iraq's foreign minister says the parliament can still approve a security pact with the United States despite scuffles among lawmakers in Baghdad.
The comment Thursday by Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari followed a chaotic session in parliament a day earlier. Shouting and shoving broke out between security guards and lawmakers loyal to Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, a foe of the United States.
Al-Sadr's group appeared to be trying to delay debate ahead of a Nov. 24 parliamentary vote on the deal, which would keep American troops in Iraq for three more years.
Despite the vocal commotion, Zebari says chances still exist for the deal's approval.
