A group of conservationists and scientists is due to set sail for an obscure corner of the Pacific Ocean in the coming months to explore a vast swirl of waste known as the Plastic Vortex. The giant gloop -- which some scientists estimate is twi...

When I first started seeing information about the plastic mess I said, "Well, I’ll never use another plastic bag as long as I live!" But then this crossed my mind, "What about the plastic siding on my house, or my plastic trash cans…what about the whale size plastic sign over my business or the….” When I mention these items to different friends or family members they say that's different. But it's not! What becomes of my giant, thick, outdoors, plastic trash cans when they get to old and nasty for me to use anymore? Well, we all know exactly what they will become; MORE plastic trash to deal with! And so will my plastic medicine bottles and my plastic detergent containers, and the very plastic computer I'm typing this on!...And that's not all that's bothering me by a long shot!

Let's say science figures out how to drag this 'Plastic Island' as I've heard it call, out of the ocean. What happens to these billions of tons of plastic gump? I've been reading other sites and some say the following: "We need to put it 'up' somewhere". Well, I don't like either choice of were they seem to think 'Up' is. One choice is, "UP under the ice at one of the poles". The other choice is, "UP into outer space". Terrible ideas!! Yet, there is still more that is bothering me.

We will need international corporation on a level never seen before in the history of mankind. Why do I say so? Because the only other time mankind has come together to rescue the world was during World War 2. I read this on another site: The world came together to defeat Adolph Hitler. However, he was easy to focus on because he was proud to tell everyone who would listen that he wanted to rule the world. That was so frightening to people that they could put aside their difference long enough to get rid of him. Today our problems are to diverse for people to stay focused on.

That's another thing that bothers me greatly. The terrible plastic mess is just another horrific problem the earth contends with. What about the destruction of the rainforests, the driving of the wildlife to extinction, the over fishing of the oceans, the ever expanding deserts, it literally goes on and on.

Now I'll admit a great deal of what I have been saying is taken from other sites and thus far there is only one that doesn't depend on international 'total' corporation. Here's what that one says: "I recently saw a SiFi movie with this premise: other planets in the universe decide that if they don't step in and remove the destructive species (mankind) the earth will surly die." Now interestingly enough, add the people who come to your door and read the following scripture, "God will bring to ruin those ruining the earth", very similar. The thought of something supernatural has sounded quite unrealistic to me in the past. However, here of late and in view of my above statements it is now sounding more plausible" .

Then it goes on to say: "As a final thought I’d like to add one more comment that I read while surfing. This one was left in answer to the US government’s recent announcement of their ‘drop in the bucket’ offering of 30 percent less auto pollution by 2016. It went as follows: "The thought of an outraged god finally stepping in is much more terrifying to me then the thought of never being able to drive my Volvo again."

(I also now find myself in full agreement with that last statement).
